<< The Five Quadrants of Portland

FEATURING:

Reflections and voices from this month's sixth annual memorial for Keaton Otis.  A young African American man, Keaton Otis was fatally shot in a traffic stop by Portland police in 2010 while in mental health crisis.  "Justice For Keaton Otis" vigils have taken place every month for the past six years, and were tirelessly led by Otis' father, Fred Bryant, until his death in 2013.  Organizers have continued the vigils for Keaton and now Fred, and met on May 12th at Maranatha Church in NE Portland to memorialize them both, six years to the day past Keaton's death.

AND:

Longtime Portland filmmaker, visual media artist, and self described "rabble rouser" Vanessa Renwick, speaking ahead of an upcoming retrospective of her short works.  Vanessa, founder of the Oregon Department of Kick Ass, has been active in Portland's DIY experimental filmmaking community for over twenty years.  Her loosely documentary work often explores radical politics and environmental issues, with an emphasis on landscape and place in the Pacific Northwest.  The Northwest Film Center will screen eleven short works spanning her career on June 9th at 7:30pm, and upstairs in the Portland Art Museum, her installation piece Next Level Fucked Up will run through mid-July.

AND:

Nili Yosha and Talilo Marfil of film education organization Outside the Frame talking about the upcoming premiere of their students' new documentary, The Lost Boys of Portlandia.  Outside the Frame provides film workshops and trainings to local homeless and marginalized youth.  Their newest work, a film within a film, explores the themes of Peter Pan and the Lost Boys in relation to the lived experience of youth homelessness in Portland.  Revolution Hall in SE Portland will host its gala premiere on June 7th, also featuring student-made documentary shorts on drug use, gender identity, healthcare and more.
