<< The Five Quadrants of Portland

We look at Trump's recent executive order sharply restricting immigration and refugee resettlement, particularly from Muslim-majority countries.  While its proponents view it as an anti-terrorism measure, it's been widely criticized by others, including many government officials, as discriminatory based upon ethnicity and religion, and it's been widely referred to as the Muslim Ban.  The ban has prompted large protests at airports across the US in support of immigrants and refugees impacted by the executive order.  At the same time, Portland, Multnomah County, the state of Oregon and other institutions have committed to providing sanctuary for undocumented immigrants, as the federal government signals intentions to step up deportations and Trump threatens to strip sanctuary cities of federal funding.

FEATURING:

- interfaith leaders, including Muslim refugees, who denounced the ban at NE Portland's Augustana Lutheran Church, which provided sanctuary to undocumented immigrant and labor rights activist Francisco Aguirre in 2014

- scenes from local protests against the immigration ban at the Portland International Airport (PDX), which drew hundreds

- an extended interview with local Muslims Melika Belhaj and Fatmah Worfeley about the ban, the protests, Muslim identity, intersecting racial justice issues and more.  Melika is a Moroccan activist and artist, and Fatmah is an Afro-Arab student organizer
