Episode 114: Deep In Africa

12:00pm, 10-10-2021
<< Tropicology

Three weeks ago I played a deep Africa set based on the sounds from the Sahel region on the south edge of the Sahara desert, sounds that are most frequently associated with Mali and the griot tradition of the ancient Malian Empire. Today we are going back into deep Africa, but a different flavor of deep Africa. Today’s set will be deep funk and rock; sounds with more international influences, like fuzz guitar and James Brown screams. This music is the African response to hearing psychedelic soul and rock music from Europe and the US, such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Countries represented in today’s set include the usual suspects for my African rock sets: Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, and Benin, but I will also throw in a rare few tracks of Zamrock on Tropicology. And I will be doing something else rare on Tropicology by playing a few tracks from African countries north of the Sahara; today we will hear from Egypt, Algeria, and Libya. And this is the second Sunday in October, so we will be continuing the conversation about race and police in our country.
