Episode 129: Deep Africa Soul

12:00pm, 1-23-2022
<< Tropicology

Today’s episode is an all-Africa lineup… we’ll hear from Ghana and Nigeria, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, and South Africa. We’ll also hear a few more tracks from the recently issued Habibi Funk 2 compilation which brings us sounds from Morocco and Kenya by way of Oman. Just like all my playlists so far this year, I’m staying away from oldies… my ears want to hear modern sounds right now, which means all music from the mid-70s or later, disco and beyond. I suppose you would call this a soul set today; there is some funk, but there is also some afrobeat, some dance floor fillers, and I’m even kicking off with a few tracks very much in a Jamaican rocksteady vibe. One other identifying characteristic in today’s show will be long songs… this week was a busy work week for Encyclopedia Sound, so it’s a good week to drop in a few of those 15-minute African epics. Put all those elements together, and I’ll call today’s playlist deep soul from Africa. One other agenda item for the show today will be a news item related to the police change movement, a conversation I want to continue on this show.
