Episode 133: Club Safari

12:00pm, 2-20-2022
<< Tropicology

This week we return to the oldest show theme on Tropicology, the theme I used for the very first episode back in 2014. That theme is titled Club Safari, and it focuses on Afro-Latin and other African sounds showing influence from the Americas. This music is mostly from West and Central Africa, mostly from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The Club Safari theme encompasses African covers of Latin American styles such as pachanga and bolero. It also covers more distinctly African styles like Congolese Rumba and soukouss. And it covers other hybrids of African and American styles, such as highlife and African soul. We’ll hear from a wide range of countries today: music from Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, and The Congo. We’ll start out with tracks featuring a garage rock edge, then we’ll move into music showing more direct latin influences. Hour two will kick off with a mellow acoustic sound before moving into some uptempo soukous to close the set.
