Episode 145: Deep Arty

This episode is a deep soul sampler… I’ve basically got a stack of new things in my collection that all have some slower, deeper sounds. We’ll hear from a few countries in Africa; we’ll also hear from Brazil, Colombia, Guadeloupe and Martinique. The first set comes in with a little bit of a bluesy profile, a soul in the city kind of sound. Before the end of the first hour I’ll dip into some slower tempo fare, then we’ll pull up with some modern funk. The second hour today trends more towards those arty sounds… I’ll have some gwoka and some nordestino soul from Brazil before we smooth out with some jazz influenced modern soul. The final set dips into some arty gwoka, then we send it out with some modern MPB from Brazil. There is definitely more of a modern focus on today’s episode… there are a few tracks from the 70s here, but mostly 80s music up to modern day. The vibe I’m going for today is like a very hip rooftop nightclub in an exotic tropical city. The singers are generally giving it to us like our own nightclub entertainers… but there are unusual elements for our ears in almost every song. These tracks have one foot on soul and jazz island, but one foot firmly in tropical waters.
