Five Quadrants presents an hour-long special on student journalism in Portland!

FEATURING:

Tim Schulze, teacher at Harrison Park School, and Marc Moscato, executive director of Know Your City, discussing the soon-to-be-released Jade Journal, a multilingual newspaper created over twelve weeks by Tim's 5th grade students in collaboration with KYC.  The students received journalism training from local media professionals, interviewed community leaders, and then went on to write stories about the history, sociology and changing demographics of their own neighborhood, the diverse 82nd Ave community of SE Portland.  A release party for the paper, which will have a print run of 14,000 copies, is coming up on February 15th.

AND

A radio piece by Zoe Brown, a student at Pacific Crest Community School in NE Portland, from her podcasting series "No Place of Our Own."  The six-episode series, created as part of her senior thesis, examines homelessness in the Portland metro area.  Today's piece, entitled "We All Have a Right to Survive, Houseless Included," features an interview with Ibrahim Mubarak, local advocate and co-founder of Right 2 Survive, Right 2 Dream Too and Dignity Village.  The rest of her series is available here.
