In 2020, following the murder of George Floyd, the largest civil rights protest in recent history erupted worldwide during a global pandemic. Portland, Oregon, became the focus of media attention for its protests and demonstrations against systemic racism and police brutality. TIPPING POINT is a documentary film that captures the first 90 days of the Portland protests. Told through the individual stories of Portlanders on the ground, Tipping Point humanizes the struggle while allowing Portland’s story to serve as a mirror to the rest of the country—the past that brought us here and the future we must choose.
Willamette Week wrote that Tipping Point reaches for a “deeper, depoliticized look at the city’s spotlight-grabbing reckoning” through compelling interviews by Julianne R. Johnson and stunning footage captured by director Jon Meyer. It creates a window to examine the recent protests through the perspectives of local protesters, police, activists, live-streamers, historians, and civil rights advocates, that goes beyond the mass-media representation of tear gas, flash-bangs and people screaming.
Most of the footage for Tipping Point was captured by the director, Jon Meyer, as he showed up night after night to witness the Portland protests, and the perspective comes from the streets. Along the way, people volunteered their time to be interviewed to record this vital document. As word spread about the project, live-streamers and photographers offered their work to be used in the film. The documentary was shaped by feedback from a national council of BIPOC activists, filmmakers, producers, sociologists, historians, artists, writers and educators.
The film’s genesis came about while The Old Church Concert Hall (TOC) was shuttered due to Covid-19 and focused on presenting virtual programming in keeping with its mission. One of TOC's artist partners, local filmmaker Jon Meyer, was on the streets capturing the protests in the weeks following the death of George Floyd. Julianne Johnson, the moderator of TOC’s social justice program We Can Listen, collaborated with Meyer to develop a program about the Portland protests for the We Can Listen series. An early work-in-progress of the film was streamed in November 2020 to an international audience of over 10,000. Then a few generous donors offered funds to help cover the start-up costs of making the film. In 2021 the documentary grew into a feature film and in 2022 made its way onto the film festival circuit. Tipping Point had its worldwide premiere at the Social Justice Film Festival in Seattle, WA where it won the GOLD prize for Best Documentary and Best in Fest.
Funds raised at the Portland premiere this June 15th will bolster efforts to make Tipping Point widely available online. No one involved in producing this documentary will receive profits or royalties. Any profits will be distributed to benefit BIPOC-owned and operated businesses and organizations in the Portland community.
Directed by Jon Meyer. Co-produced by Julianne R. Johnson. A WE CAN LISTEN Production. Executive Producer TOC. Co-Executive Producer Some Serious Business.
CONTENT ADVISORY: This documentary film includes footage obtained during the protests on the streets of Portland and contains swearing, street violence, and strong political rhetoric. It may not be suitable for all viewers.

8th Vanport Mosaic Festival
Join us for two weeks of memory activism to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport - and to honor the community that called Vanport home.
From May 18th to May 29th, the 8th Vanport Mosaic Festival will offer in-person, virtual, and self-paced memory activism opportunities to Remember, Repair, Reclaim, and Re-image our collective story.
---
2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the flood that destroyed Vanport, once Oregon’s second-largest city and the largest WWII federal housing project in the United States. We will commemorate Oregon’s Katrina-like disaster with exhibits, art performances, a reunion/celebration of former Vanport residents, documentary screenings and oral history recordings, tours of the historic Vanport area, and community engagement activities.
Flood survivors are now in their 80s and 90s, so the Festival offers a long-overdue opportunity to honor and learn from their experience. The 75th anniversary of the flood, especially in light of the Covid pandemic and the ongoing devastating impact of climate change, will offer a timely opportunity to reflect on the state of emergency preparedness of our city, particularly on how disasters often replicate and deepen social inequalities.
For a taste of the Vanport Mosaic Festival and its impact, we invite you to watch these short documentaries:
- History from the Bottom Up: The Making of The Vanport Mosaic Festival 2016
- Legacy of A Forgotten City - The Vanport Mosaic Festival 2017

Legendary synth composer and recording artist Suzanne Ciani leads us on a quadraphonic sound journey, exploring the limits of spatial audio and live Buchla performance at the historic First Congregational Church of Portland. Opener Qur’an Shaheed graces us with an extended ambient set, all accompanied by a stunning light experience.
Suzanne Ciani
A five-time Grammy award-nominated composer, electronic music pioneer, and neo-classical recording artist, Suzanne has released over 20 solo albums including Seven Waves and The Velocity of Love, along with a landmark quad LP LIVE Quadraphonic, which restarted her Buchla modular performances. Her work has been featured in films, games, and countless commercials as well. She was inducted into the first class of Keyboard Magazine's Hall of Fame alongside other synth luminaries, including Bob Moog, Don Buchla, and Dave Smith and received the Moog Innovation Award. A Life in Waves, a documentary about Ciani’s life and work, debuted at SXSW in 2017. Ciani is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Masters in Music Composition from the University of California, Berkeley.

John Duncan (Wichita, Kansas 1953) is a pioneer of performance art, installations, video and experimental audio who has lived and worked in Los Angeles, Tokyo, Amsterdam and northern Italy. His many releases are acclaimed by critics and composers as benchmarks of experimental music.
Schneider TM is a multidimensional music project of Dirk Dresselhaus, named after his nickname Schneider, which oscillates extensively between adventurous electronic pop-music and experimental, sometimes improvised freeform music, while occasionally bringing these and other opposing elements together.
Scot Jenerik (born 1964) is a multidisciplinary artist/instrumentalist, instrument builder, composer and sound engineer. He has performed, lectured and distributed works extensively in the United States, Europe and Japan for over 30 years.
Mr. Jenerik's explosive performances, incorporating hand built instruments of metal and fire, are infamous both around his home of San Francisco/Portland and throughout the world. Combining elements of Kodo drumming, drone and noise, Jenerik transfers the intensity of physical performance into a throbbing soundscape of rhythms, drones and direct elemental contact. His most recent performances are exploring harmonies and harmonics through the non traditional use of traditional instruments from Turkey and India.
Chandra Shukla (born Vivek Chandra Shukla 1975 Alameda, California) is an experimental/avant-garde musician interested in audio, video, live performances, graphic design and runs the independent record label Erototox Decodings. His history stems from learning Indian Classical Music by learning tabla from the likes of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri and sitar from Pandit Habib Khan.
Xambuca is his main, sometimes instrumental and electro-acoustic experimental but more often non-categorizable music project, and one that has shared the stage with many guests including a rotating cast of characters with audio/visual elements both live and exhibited. The sounds are emitted from synths, guitar, samplers, sitar and vocals.

Italian alt metal superstars Lacuna Coil are shifting the paradigm yet again with new album, Black Anima. Just as Comalies (2002), Shallow Life (2009), and chart-smashing Delirium (2016) upped the ante and rocketed the Milan-based outfit into the upper echelons of metaldom, Black Anima is a level beyond all that. It's both a hard look at the past and a brave sprint into the future. Two years in the making, Lacuna Coil's ninth album arrives after the group published their first book, Nothing Stands in Our Way, in 2018 and celebrated in auspicious fashion their 20th Anniversary with an ultra-exclusive, all-out insane live show in London, dubbed The 119 Show: Live in London. Lacuna Coil have never shied away from hard work. Nor, have they restrained their creative impulses to push things-new songs "Anima Nera," "Reckless," "Veneficium," and "Sword of Anger" are mind-blowers!-to the absolute limit.
