She describes herself as an autodidact, plastic artist, muralist and promoter of recreational art. After graduating from school in México, Erika continued her studies at Moorpark College in California. She has worked with faux finishes and performs mural restoration for commercial and residential clients. Inspired by the spirit of her ancestors and guided by the legacy of artisan hands and artists from Jalisco, she continues to create art that honors her roots. Her style interweaves cultural symbols, colors, wisdom, memory and purpose into her art. Working as an Advocate and Case Manager in Domestic Violence shelters with individuals who are survivors, Erika developed a class based in theory behind color that focuses on art as self-care.                 <h2>Safe Spaces &amp; Bold Conversations: Nikki Chen on Equity in Action<br></h2><p>In this two-part interview,<b>&nbsp;</b>Karen Morrison and Elizabeth Madrigal share an open and honest dialogue with Nikki Chen about her work to advance equity for all residents through her role as Vancouver’s Business Partner for the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Ms. Chen’s joyful and infectious presence illuminates difficult material as she delves into the complexities of the creation of a safe, equitable space for all. She also leaves listeners better informed, reassured and feeling heard, understood and empowered.&nbsp;</p><p>Nicole “Nikki” Chen is the Business Partner for the Office of Equity and Inclusion at the City of Vancouver. She partners with all departments within the city to advance equity for all residents. Nikki previously spent 19 years of her career working in healthcare. Eight of those years she spent working for Stanford Hospital, located in Palo Alto, CA. Nikki has a skill for creating a safe environment that allows for honest and open conversation. Her joyful and infectious presence is known to leave a lasting and meaningful impact, and you always walk away from her feeling empowered. Nikki uses her leadership platform to lead with integrity, patience, positivity, and curiosity with everyone she encounters. Nikki’s current goal is to follow in the footsteps of her mentor, Alicia Sojourner, and become a Director of Equity and Inclusion. She teaches courses about social inequality and uses participatory action research led by marginalized communities to build transformative social change.
