Talking With The Wind: The Mystery of Opal Whiteley

Opal Whiteley, of a young woman from Cottage Grove, Oregon. In 1920 she published a childhood diary about her time in the woods and her love of nature. It became wildly popular and then was later condemned as a hoax. This diary created an international controversy that led to her eventual decline in mental health. 

Dmae Roberts co-produced this with Playwright Dorothy Velasco in 1988 with music by John Doan. It also contains a clip from the only known recording of Opal Whiteley before she died in 1992.

Ada Lovelace initiated modern computer programming. Ada Lovelace born in 1815 as the child of poet Lord Byron. She never knew her father, and her mother diverted her studies into math and sciences in hopes that Ada would avoid his poetical inclinations. Instead, Ada fused her influences into what she called “poetical science,” her expression for finding the art and beauty in mathematics. At the age of twelve, determined to fly, she began constructing wings, documenting her studies in the book Flyology. Her most famous accomplishment is publishing extensive notes for an early computer design, considered to be the world’s first computer program.
