Safe Spaces & Bold Conversations: Nikki Chen on Equity in Action

In this two-part interview, Karen Morrison and Elizabeth Madrigal share an open and honest dialogue with Nikki Chen about her work to advance equity for all residents through her role as Vancouver’s Business Partner for the Office of Equity and Inclusion. Ms. Chen’s joyful and infectious presence illuminates difficult material as she delves into the complexities of the creation of a safe, equitable space for all. She also leaves listeners better informed, reassured and feeling heard, understood and empowered.

Nicole “Nikki” Chen is the Business Partner for the Office of Equity and Inclusion at the City of Vancouver. She partners with all departments within the city to advance equity for all residents. Nikki previously spent 19 years of her career working in healthcare. Eight of those years she spent working for Stanford Hospital, located in Palo Alto, CA. Nikki has a skill for creating a safe environment that allows for honest and open conversation. Her joyful and infectious presence is known to leave a lasting and meaningful impact, and you always walk away from her feeling empowered. Nikki uses her leadership platform to lead with integrity, patience, positivity, and curiosity with everyone she encounters. Nikki’s current goal is to follow in the footsteps of her mentor, Alicia Sojourner, and become a Director of Equity and Inclusion. Once she is done creating a safe and equitable space for all, Nikki hopes to retire and own a small farm on the shores of Puerto Vieja, Costa Rica.
