The Second Case of the Latin Fiesta
We are back this week with the second Latin theme show!
The focus of the first hour is music of Cuba and Peru. From Cuba we will be focusing on Guajira, a musical form from the Cuban countryside. Guajiras are folksy and acoustic, often performed with strings and percussion only. Afro-Peruvian is a genre that fits nicely with the Guajira... this music is from the Afro-Peruvian community, and also tends to feature just strings and percussion to accompany the singer.
The second hour of this week's show branches out to the orchestras... we will hear some of the classic big bands of Cuba's golden era, the late 1950s. Then we will update the sound to the Latin Jazz movement in the US in the 60s with music from Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Cal Tjader, and Kako... finally ending with a little straight salsa from the "Nuevo Yorica" scene.
