XRAY is Powered by Volunteers!

We look for individuals who are motivated, independent workers, team players, organized, efficient, and excellent communicators with a love of community, music and support XRAY.FM's mission in our city and beyond.

We embrace and encourage our volunteers ’ differences in age, color, disability, ethnicity, family or marital status, gender identity or expression, language, national origin, physical and mental ability, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, veteran status, and other characteristics that make our volunteers unique.

Volunteering is an incredible way to connect with your community, meet like-minded folks and contribute to a fulfilling mission. Not just will you be able to gain skills, but you will be able to network and get to know DJs, musicians, engineers, talk show hosts, and experts in our community.

Volunteer With XRAY Morning News

Frequently Asked Questions

What are you looking for in volunteers?

We look for volunteers for a wide range of activities! We currently have opportunities including administrative work, content creation, in-studio operations, news writing, event support, community outreach, audio editing, phone banking, and, of course, becoming a DJ. Don't see what you're looking for? Just ask us on the form below, we'll work with you one-on-one to find the volunteer opportunity that makes sense for you.

Do I have to fill out the form or can I just sign up when I see something I like?

We'd definitely prefer you fill out the form so that we can bring you to a volunteer orientation and know what we have current interest in from folks. We do have a volunteers listserv, but most opportunities are not emailed out to it unless they are significant projects without enough help currently (typically station-wide objectives/events like fund drives, big events, holiday thank yous, marketing events, etc.).

Want to stay in the loop with XRAY in the meantime? Sign up for our newsletter!

Do I need to come to anywhere physically to volunteer?

At the moment, no! Only essential personnel are currently allowed into our studio and office spaces for the safety of our community. We have shifted new volunteer opportunities to be remote in all ways possible. When a physical item has to exchange hands for the activity, we'll find a place to meet safely outside.

Note for in-person volunteering in the future: The XRAY office is not ADA accessible. We would love to meet one on one to get you acquainted with XRAY in a more accessible location, just let us know when you register interest. Due to the pandemic, most volunteer activities have become remote, but we hope to be able to welcome you to our office and studio in the future!

How do I become a DJ?

You pitch us a show!

**We are currently accepting applications for new DJs! If you would like to apply, please go through the show application at bit.ly/xrayapplication. While we welcome you to fill out the general volunteer interest form, especially if you're new to volunteering with us so you can get acquainted with the internal workings of the station, if you list becoming a DJ as your only interest on it you'll get an email asking you to fill out the same application linked above.

What are you looking for in DJs/shows? We're always looking to increase representation in experiences, genres, backgrounds, identities, and more. Since XRAY utilizes a freeform radio format, we want to know about the unique experience you'll bring to the schedule and the city of Portland on the airwaves! We review applications on a rolling basis, but we are a small team so it may take a while to hear back! Generally, to have a show, be ready for a 6-month minimum commitment and being an active participant in the station. That means you should expect at least 3 hours/week for each hour of programming (so a 2-hour show would be 6), be ready for quarterly all-station meetings, and be an active participant in station-wide events.

Don't see the answer to your question?

Feel free to ask it in the question box on the interest form! This form does not lock you into anything, but helps us plan to bring folks into the community.
