The Second Case of the Manding Swing

This week we turn back to Africa with a mix of traditional and dancefloor music from Mali, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin, and Guinea.

I start the show this week with 3 tracks from the Sahel Sounds imprint on Portland's Mississippi Records label. From these rootsy beginnings we start to hear threads of more modern and popular sounds being woven in. We pass through some dense voodoo funk at the end of the first hour.

The second hour this week moves a bit closer to the dancefloor with a selection of funk from the late 70s and early 80s. The set ends with 3 epic length hypnotics from the West African psychedelic scene. 

Focus this week on modern music that retains some of the traditional musical forms we heard in the first hour.
