Holy Cow, it's been a month since we did a show with an African Theme!
Let's get back to the Motherland people!!
Today we will hear African music with deep influences from American soul and funk... we will be listening to music from Ghana and Nigeria. Musically, these 2 countries share a lot of common ground:
- These are the only 2 countries in Western Africa with English as official language
- The first 2 countries in Western Africa to have recording studios and record pressing facilities
- These countries were exposed to American music courtesy of English colonial radio... both countries produced less Afro-Latin than their neighbors
- These countries share credit for launching the highlife genre in the 1950s
- These countries were leaders in producing African funk in the 1970s and 80s... lots of James Brown influence!
It's approachable, crowd-pleasing African pop and funk from the 1970s!
