The Case of the Sad Soul Day

Today's show, following the Presidential Inauguration, is dedicated to feelings of sadness, alienation, and exile. Beautiful music today that gives expression to our anxiety and our despair.

The first hour today is devoted to Brazil. Of course we need to hear from the Brazilian exiles, Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil; this set features many songs recorded during and after their political exile by the Brazilian dictatorship.

The second hour today is devoted to Africa, and this is where we will hear a turn from despair to political resolve. This hour begins with music from the Tuareg, the nomadic peoples of the Sahel region who do not acknowledge the authority of the African governments who claim their ancestral lands. They live in a state of constant exile. Of course we must end this hour with the godfather of African political resistance Fela Kuti.
