<< The Five Quadrants of Portland

FEATURING:

Maru Mora Villalpando of NWDC Resistance, discussing this week's hunger strike and work stoppage at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma, WA.  The private immigration prison, with a 1500 person capacity, is where people detained by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) throughout the Pacific Northwest - including Portland - are held.  Since it began on Monday, Maru says the hunger and labor strike has grown to as many as 750 detainees, who are demanding better conditions and expedited trials.  She and other NWDCR organizers have led a solidarity demonstration and encampment throughout the week outside the detention center, with periodic contact from strikers inside.*

AND:

Caitlin Burke, community economic development manager with Hacienda CDC, discussing local Latinx public market the Portland Mercado.  The Mercado, located in the Foster/Powell neighborhood of SE Portland and known for its many food carts, serves as both a business incubator for local immigrant entrepreneurs & a cultural hub for neighbors and the Latinx community.  It celebrates its two-year anniversary on Saturday April 15th at noon with its "El Pueblo Unido" concert and event, featuring seven hours of local music & family-friendly activities.

*Update: Emmanuel Ayala Frutos, the Portland DACA recipient referenced in the first segment of today's show, has since been released on bail
