The Candidates
Bruce Broussard is a publisher and business owner who served in the US Marine Corps and Oregon Army National Guard. His community work includes service with VFW, Buffalo Soldiers, Boys & Girls Clubs, McCoy Academy, Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Fund, NAACP, Urban League, Kiwanis, Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, and the United Way.
Maria Garcia is a mother of two and a business owner who is co-chair of the New Portlanders Policy Commission and one of its representatives on the Sanctuary City task force. Ms. Garcia is also a former president of Don't Shoot Portland; an inmate advocate with the Oregon Department of Corrections, Renter Screening Criteria Policy Advisory Group; a Food Equity for Healthy Latino Families Project member; and a former employee of the Mexican Consulate in the community affairs department
Susheela Jayapal is an attorney and community advocate. who previously served as General Counsel at Adidas America, Inc. and has spent almost two decades working to advance social, economic, and racial justice through leadership and advocacy at organizations including Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette, Portland Schools Foundation, All Hands Raised, Metropolitan Family Service, Literary Arts, and the Regional Arts and Culture Council
Sharon Maxwell is a business woman and community leader with 20 years of experience running her own construction company. She has also founded two nonprofits that provide living wage jobs and works to address systemic institutional racism at its core. Ms. Maxwell has served on many community, city, and county boards, addressing disparities and economic inequalities, including those faced by homeless and houseless people in crisis.
Moderator
John Horvick is Vice President and Political Director at DHM Research, an independent and non-partisan public opinion firm. He regularly conducts surveys and focus groups across Oregon on the policy issues that will likely be in focus during the 2018 campaign season, including healthcare, energy and the environment, and taxes. John is a long-time City Club member and a past-president.
