Listeners, it is time today to refresh our memories on the joyous sounds of past "Night at Club Safari" shows. Here is a bit of a greatest hits collection with a loose focus on sounds from The Congo.

The opening of today's show reveals some of the popular forms of this region at the dawn of the modern music era. These sounds draw heavily on local traditions, but they also reflect some exposure to Western musical forms such as calypso and Cuban son. Percussion is generally a spoon on a Coke bottle!

The next set reveals some added instruments and musical sophistication, as Congolese musicians adapted Cuban musical forms. We end the first hour with the full blossoming of Congolese rumba, one of the first true hybrids of Western music with locally invented musical forms.

The second hour today begins with slow jams, then progresses into some Afro-Latin sounds from other countries during the 1970s. We wrap up today's show with soukouss from The Congo; this is the musical style that displaced Congolese Rumba starting in the late 60s.
