Tonight on Night School, we pay tribute to the late Carl Smith. Carl passed earlier this month, inspiring a bevy of remembrances among his musical contemporaries. His legacy as a large ensemble bandleader in Portland dates back to the late 1950s. Across six decades his flagship group, the Natural Gas Co., would expand and contract, bringing in some of our city’s greatest jazz, funk & disco players.
