The First 2018 Case of the Night at Club Safari

Hard to believe we are halfway through this year without new content in the Club Safari genre!!

Here is another show inspired by a string of recent reissues and compilations. The theme this week is vintage tropical sounds from both sides of the Atlantic: Angola, Nigeria, and The Congo are represented from Africa, and we throw in some New World content courtesy of a compilation from French territories of Guadalupe and Martinique along with the flavorful 2011 Sofrito compilation.

I kick off the show today with material from the recently reissued first 2 LPs from Angola's Bonga: "Angola 72" and "Angola 74," published on the Lusafrica label. I don't recommend any subsequent work from Bonga, but these first two albums are strong! The first hour progresses through vampy 60s material from the new compilation "Disques Debs International" on the Strut Records label, along with vintage Congolese rumba from the Soul Jazz Records box set "Congo Revolution," issued for International Record Store Day this year.

The second hour today starts with slowjams from Angola, followed by uptempo merengue and lambada from around the Caribbean. A rare pond-straddling mix on today's Adventures!
