The 2018 Case of the Fall Fund Drive
The days grow shorter... the fruit grows fat on the vine. Time for that fall tradition: the semi-annual XRAY FM fundraising drive.
As frequent listeners know, I try to cook up a little something for each fund drive from the desk of Encyclopedia Sound. This fall I am presenting love letters I have penned to community radio, XRAY FM, and music.
There will be songs, too...
A bit of a greatest hits theme today as I present uptown latin with swing. This is music from the era just before the salsa wave took over. During the 60s and 70s, latin bands and albums often featured a huge range of styles including bolero, mambo, cha-cha-cha, and more. Modern US styles such as jazz, rock, and soul were being fused with latin rhythms. At the same time, in many parts of the Americas, it was still more common to book a full orchestra for a dance hall rather than a small combo with amplified instruments. So this is the end of the golden era of latin orchestra music, a time when you hear the most yankee swing.
No shortage of swing today as I play a range of dancefloor burners from the 60s and 70s.
