This week we return again to the newest destination in the Encyclopedia Sound sonic itinerary: the Antilles, including Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Haiti.
The sounds that prevailed here in the 60s have everything I love about ska and early Afro-Latin music: unabashed optimism, unwavering energy, and raw garage-echo production. These songs charmed their way into my heart with no trouble at all.
We start today's set with the common nod to old-timey sounds, showing off the raw charm of material from the 60s. We'll hear some latin-influenced numbers as well as our slow jams before we wrap up the set with material from the 80s. These songs show how the unique groove of the Antilles found fusion with mainstream sounds such as funk and disco.
