Night School #216: American Music Program ft. Devin Phillips, Peter Piazza & Chisao Hata
Tonight on Night School, I am delighted to host the American Music Program. Founded by the late Thara Memory (of The Gangsters fame), this non-profit has been delivering jazz education to Portland's elementary and high school students for ages. Students of the program have competed and won at the The Monterey Jazz Festival, Essentially Ellington at Lincoln Center, The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, among others. Individuals in the program have gone on to receive scholarships at the The Juilliard School, Berklee College of Music, Manhattan School of Music, The New School for Jazz, Oberlin College Conservatory, etc.
Tonight we'll listen to student performance material and connect with the program's artistic director, Devin Phillips, as well as elementary program educator, Peter Piazza. Self-described "program muse," Chisao Hata, will be in attendance as well. This all comes in advance of the organization's upcoming showcase at the Alberta Rose Theatre on Dec. 22nd.
