The New Year Case of the Night at Club Safari
It was once a frequent staple of these Adventures to play my Afro-Latin sets; cases of the Night at Club Safari came often in the first few years at XRAY. That tradition faded a bit over the past year as my new music acquisition turned away from that genre... but today I am back with a wholly new set of Afro-Latin gems from Ivory Coast, The Congo, Nigeria, Senegal, and Benin.
I start today's set with a survey of very groovy 45 singles. This is music from the 60s, when African nations were channeling the sounds of Western popular rock. This era saw the most frequent use of drum kits and the 3-minute power single format, and there is a raw crunch about the guitar sound resembling production qualities of the Stones and the Beatles. That sound slowly morphs into more traditional Afro-Latin over the course of the first hour.
The second hour today begins with slower fare (perhaps not exactly slow jams... but close). Then we move into more current offshoots of the Afro-Latin sound, including a soukouss burner and some fusion afrobeat from Benin stars Honore Avolonto et l'Orchestre Black Santiago.
