The Sixth Case of the Uptown Latin Jam Session
Stepping out today in our finest fringe-sleeved shirts and bell bottoms for some grooovy uptown Latin tunes from the 1960s and 70s. This is the era when the Latin music scene was transitioning from large orchestra format to small combo format, and it was an era when Latin was staying relevant by fusing with popular current sounds like rock, jazz, and soul.
We start the set today with the strongest echoes of source Cuban sounds from the roaring Havana 50s. These are relatively straight takes on traditional Cuban orchestra fare played by small jazz groups. In the second set today we slow down with some groovy cha cha cha, then we pick up at the end of the first hour with some 60s pop fusion sounds.
The second hour today leans 70s, with a stronger infusion of funk and soul. We start the set with that 60's Latin staple: boogaloo and shingaling. This is Latin pop music with soul claps; approachable sounds for gringo ears. We progress into some funky 70s jazz fusion and ride it to the end of the show.
Hip to the trip, cool is the rule; it's groovy urban Latin sounds of a certain era on today's Adventures.
