The Seventh Case of the Uptown Latin Soiree

Today we pay tribute to the groovy groovy sounds of latin lounge in the golden era. This is all music from the 50s and 60s, before the full eclipse of rock music popularity. This was probably the high point of latin record sales in the US as these mod clubby sounds competed with jazz and folk for the hearts and dollars of college kids and young dance club devotees. Almost all the records I am playing today were pressed and marketed in the US, a rarity for the Adventures!

We start the set today with jazzy sounds of latin descarga. We follow the jazz vibe to the dancefloor with some mambo and cha cha cha in the middle of the first hour, then we proceed to torchier lounge sounds at the end of the first hour. Of note for Buena Vista Social Club fans: we will hear some very early vocals from BVSC alumnus Omara Portoundo, singing here with the Julio Gutierrez orchestra.

The second hour today starts with your beloved slow jams, then perks up with some 60s pop influences. By the end of the hour we will be on a rarely covered branch of the latin music tree as we spin some boogaloo.
