The Case of the co-DJ'd African Holiday

This week you will be treated to an historic first:

For the first time on The Adventures of Encyclopedia Sound I will be co-hosting the show with a special guest DJ:  from Portland's own Party Damage Records, Ben Hubbird will be making an appearance today to cover that other side of the African continent! 

I had the great pleasure of playing a gig with Mr. Hubbird last spring, and he is well equipped to trade platters with yours truly in an international music set. What's more, he brings an African music acumen that I lack:  knowledge of great music from East Africa. He will be ducking in today to kill you all softly with some joyful sounds from the other Motherland.

Meanwhile, I will be doing my thing with a well-known African genre that has not yet been a focus on the big show:  for the first time today, I'll be spinning a full set of AfroBeat sounds from Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Benin, including a few tunes from the father of AfroBeat, Fela Kuti. These are the African sounds that are best known in America, sounds that have inspired a current generation of AfroBeat bands based in America, including Antibalas and Kokolo.
