Episode 36: Afrikaleidoscope 2
Today we are doing another broad survey of African music… dating back to the holiday season there has been a nice little wave of new compilations and reissues released over the past 3 months, so I am throwing that material together with some records from the crates to create a nice flow. And just like the first episode of Afrikaleidoscope a few weeks ago, I am going to use the mic breaks to talk about some of these newly released LPs out there. Most of the titles are either barely distributed in the US, or not at all, so they may require a bit of digging if you want to locate them. Today’s episode of Tropicology is your tip sheet. We are going to start with Afro- Latin in the first hour, covering Senegal and Benin as well as less familiar territory in Guinea- Bissau along with the island nations of Sao Tome and Principe. The second hour today kicks off with Afrobeat from Nigeria, moving to some marchy Afropop from Benin to close the show.
