Episode 86: Africa Deep Funk 2

Today is the second installment of a 2-week focus on deep African funk. For fans of the deep funk sound from Africa, you should know that there have been 4 vinyl reissues in the past 6 months for one of the best deep funk bands from Africa, the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo of Benin. We will hear songs from 2 of those recent reissues today, along with many other tracks by Poly-Rythmo and by funk bands from a range of African countries including neighboring Togo and Nigeria, but also places with less funk tradition, such as Mali, Cameroon, and even Tanzania. Today’s episode is even deeper than last week… today we will go all the way down the rabbit hole with African funk. And because this is also the second Sunday in March I will be talking about police change and the Black Lives Matter movement during my mic breaks.
