Episode 88: Drum Caribe
Today I am bringing you listeners something a bit new on Tropicology… I’m actually really excited about this episode. The overall theme today is Drum Caribe… I will be playing various sounds from the Caribbean based on African drumming styles. One of those styles, and the style that will open the show today, is a genre that originated on the French island of Guadeloupe called Gwo Ka, a creolized name that seems to have originated from the “gross quart” barrels used to transport salt, and later fashioned into drums to make this music. I have just discovered Gwo Ka in the past year or two; so far I’ve played bits and pieces of Gwo Ka on Tropicology. But today I am devoting the first full set all to Gwo Ka… this is your Tropicology introduction to the Gwo Ka sound.
