Today’s show is one of the less frequent themes here at Tropicology, one of the points on the map that we rarely visit. The music on today’s show can be hard to place if you are not already familiar with sounds from these countries. There may be familiar elements here and there, but the underlying rhythm and the overall style did not ever break through to US audiences. It can be hard to guess where these sounds may come from. Today’s episode is that kind of show… the theme today is music from Portuguese speaking Africa, a diverse group of countries and cultures. The extended group includes Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique and the islands of São Tomé e Principe. But today’s show focuses on the 2 most well-known members of this group, Angola and Cape Verde.
