Episode 119: Tropical Oldies Part 1

Over the past couple months my playlists have been featuring moody music for the fall season… but holiday spirit starts this week on Tropicology. As my opening act for holiday programming this year I thought I would devote a couple weeks to oldies from Africa, Brazil, and Latin America. I’ll be playing oldies this week and next, leading up to the annual Tropicology Thanksgiving show, and then special programming through the holiday season. Now, when I say oldies, don’t think I’m talking about the 60s and the 70s… that’s my content on most normal weeks. For this special holiday occasion I’m playing some of the oldest international sounds in my collection, featuring music from the 30’s and the 40’s… and dipping my toes into the 50s, primarily because there is so little recorded music from Africa earlier than that. Source material for today’s show dates up to 1956 in order to get some early African recordings into the mix. Listeners this also happens to be the second Sunday in November, so I am continuing the conversation about race & policing in our country
