Episode 132: Arty Party Part 2

This week we return to a theme I covered 5 weeks ago… we are going back to the Arty Party for a second helping of outlier sounds that are hard to categorize. You know that handful of records in your collection that you never know where to file? They don’t fit with any of your other categories very well, and they don’t even sound like they belong to a recognizable genre; they are refugees from the island of misfit music. Record sellers have a name for this sort of record… they call them UFOs. Today’s Tropicology is a UFO special; these are hard to categorize sounds from the Tropical music universe. The first set will feature some music on the edge of jazz, but also with one foot in Africa; this set spans from South Africa to the Caribbean and Brazil. Next up is a set that starts with latin influenced sounds from Cuba, Colombia, and Spain, drifting into a little jazzy afrobeat from the London scene. Hour two will have a more modern sound; I’ll kick off with slower tempo deep sounds at the top, moving into some mod highlife and uptempo fusion to close out the playlist.
