The Second Case of the South African Jazz Jive Holiday
This week I repeat a theme I introduced one month ago for the Thanksgiving holiday: jazz and jive music from South African and from the South African diaspora.
This is a whole new batch of tracks from South African musical giants including Abdullah Ibrahim (first known as "Dollar Brand"), Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, The Jazz Epistles, and many more.
South African jazz was among my first discoveries in African music back in the late 80s, and I have always marveled that these artists could produce music so full of patience, wisdom, and even joy, all amid the depredations of life in apartheid South Africa. As such, this music is full of the human spirit we should all celebrate during the holiday season.
Happy holidays, everyone... see you again in 2015!
