The Case of the Anniversary Latin Fiesta
Last week my anniversary Brazil show. The week before that, my anniversary Africa show.
This week: the big anniversary Latin show!!!
As with my other anniversary shows, I'll be playing lots of the same tracks I played one year ago in my first Latin-themed show... I've been waiting a whole year to share these great tracks with you again.
The first hour is a mix of infectious old-timey hits from Cuba and Brazil. You'll hear a blend of rustic small groups and lavish orchestras, including tastes of forro and guajira. Transport yourself to a simpler time with these disarming tropical charmers.
We will start the second hour today even more firmly entrenched in "radio Havana," featuring a string of golden era hits in cha-cha-cha and charanga, popular styles of the 50s. As the second hour progresses, I'll serve up a survey... the evolution of the Cuban sound throughout the Latin diaspora in the 60s and 70s. My 60s set includes some polished gems for orchestra, as well as trendy boogaloo/shingaling styles. We end the show with 3 big anthems from the 70s, an era when many Latin artists (like 70s US rock stars) were seeking out simple, rootsy, and rustic sounds as an anecdote to the excessive studio production and party atmosphere of the 60s.
