Respected LadyLand: Ladies Sing the Blues

The blues is empowering music which evolved along with the often harrowing experiences of African-Americans within this system of oppression. It became a means of musically documenting history providing an oral & aural testimonial, capturing perspectives that may have otherwise gone unheard.

Beyond that, THE BLUES can serve many functions: It can be an opportunity to release sorrows, an agent of joy, a declaration of individuality, a stand against oppressors, or even an affirmation of personal identity.

As we head into this next chapter of our collective American experience, we can learn a lot from the blues as a tool for communication. I hope you’ll take a listen.
