Gladys was known for being shrewd, tough, fair, and extremely stylish (unanimously voted the Best Dressed Woman of 1964 by the National Association of Fashion & Accessory Designers).
Though, as fierce as she was, during the 1930s and early 1940s the music biz wasn’t interested in making deals with a Black woman. The Hampton’s addressed that by sending a white man as surrogate to sign engagement contracts on the couple’s behalf.
Gladys did not let those barriers block her from becoming a pioneer in the record industry, founding her first record label Hamp-tone Records in 1946, making her one of the first (if not THE first) Black woman to own a record label in the USA.
