Respected LadyLand - 1969 NOT Hot 100
This episode spotlights 45 rpm records released by women in 1969 that did NOT chart on Billboard's Hot 100. 1969 was the worst year for women on the Billboard year-end Hot 100 chart. Only 6 records on the 1969 year-end hot 100 were fronted to women.
Why is that? I’m not exactly sure. During the late 1960s a lot of radio stations took on a freeform format, turning to album tracks. Could that be it? I took a look to see how women performed on the Billboard year-end ALBUM charts. Only 10 albums on the top 100 were fronted by women. If you include male/female duets it’s 15.
I’m not an academic music historian, but I wonder if the Women's Liberation Movement caused a backlash for women in the record industry during 1969. I'm sure somebody out there must know the answer.
