I admire the idealism of the folk music revival movement of the
1950s & 1960s. At the heart of it was a belief that if we strip
down music to its roots, we can better recognize the humanity of other
cultures. Beyond that is the possibility of recognizing that music of
differing origins has blended together beautifully to make up the
popular music that's adored around the world. It's a point of
inspiration and prayer for peace, in theory at least. That's why
solidarity in social justice activism was a natural byproduct of that
musical movement (or is it the other way around?)
Though
the midcentury folk musical movement made a lot more space for the
voices of women than other music scenes, it's still celebrated through a
male-gaze. This episode highlights an under celebrated woman-centric
chapter of the folk revival scene
