Foodville~The Many Flavors of the New Year's Table~1/15/2026
Foodville invites you to join us around Vancouver's multicultural New Year's Day table. Vancouver has a treasure chest of global traditions. I would love to visit all of them, but alas, a half hour show....
First stop is with Bnar at Falahi Brothers Middle Eastern Cuisine, downtown. Bnar shares some of the New Years traditions
of her homeland as she guides us through a lovely Middle Eastern breakfast complete with
smoked eggplant baba ganoush and very generous hospitality. Such a delight!
Next we hop over to Krisey's Kitchen food cart on 4th Plain, and chat with THE Krisey from New Orleans. Her culture's New Year's Day meal of collard greens, cabbage, cornbread, and simmered black eyed peas, has a deep meaning and symbolism to ring in the year. Plus, it was amazing.
My next adventure is with my friend Sue who hails from Dawson MN, where pickled herring is the NY Day delicacy. Sue schools us on some other Norwegian "treats" like lutefisk and lefse. Not sure she makes them sound all that delicious, but certainly intriguing!
Finally, I get a few minutes to talk with Tania, the owner of Nostra Tavola and Neustra Mesa. Tania is from Mexico City and talks about a grape eating tradition that sounds like so much fun! She also shares the tradition of Dial de Reyes or Epiphany on January 6.
Ringing in a whole new year and forgetting the troubles of the old one, a hearty, loving meal, a picnic with family, good wishes shared with loved ones sounds like potent and hopeful medicine to be sure.
Thank you for joining us around Foodville's global table right here in the good old Couve, where we delve into the diversity of our community's menus and flavors.
