The First Case of the Holiday Leftovers
It is going to be an unusually crazy ride this week on The Adventures.
As you will know if you've been following the show, the holiday season is a time when I like to do show themes that are off my beaten path. So far this year we've had a show dedicated to music of South Africa, as well as last week's "African Symphony."
This week is a big helping of holiday leftovers. This is international music (in some cases, 'internationally-flavored' music from the States) that has not fit in to my normal themes. We will hear some unabashed pop music that is just too commercial for my common show themes... this will include some examples of African "jerk," the rock-jazz hybrid that was popular in Europe during the 60s. We will hear some international covers of popular Western songs, along with guitar music from the fringes of the Islamic world.
One set today will showcase odd combinations of genre and location, such as Bossa Nova from The Congo, Latin Jazz from Ethiopia, Salsa from Brazil, and Samba from Spanish Harlem. We will wind things up today with some dancefloor-friendly sounds, including current Afrobeat revival band Les Freres Smith.
In short, it's a random roulette of my relegated rarities.
