The Second Case of the South African Jazz-Jive Holiday 1-16

12:00pm, 1-3-2016
<< Tropicology

Listeners, I am back from an incredible holiday journey... more on that next week.

This week I wrap up my holiday themes with another visit to South Africa. South Africa has placed more musicians into the international jazz scene than any other country in Africa. I particularly love South African jazz that includes references to jive and kwela jazz, the swing-inspired dance music that was created and played for local audiences.

I will be playing some particularly deep music today as we say goodbye to the holiday season, and we pause once again to consider all the good in our lives. As we move into a new year, some deep thoughts about the human experience, from mourning to joy, and from challenge to redemption. No country tells those stories more powerfully in a modern context than South Africa.
