The 1990s Bikini Kill song “Rebel Girl” has been popping up a lot again since their reunion. In fact, as I was putting this episode of outspoken, independent-minded women “Rebel Girl” just kept popping into my head. So I decided to name the episode OG Rebel Girls.

Many of the women featured on this episode have been erased in our collective memory, yet they paved the way for some of the feminist musical voices of the early 90s that are still so celebrated today.

I suppose the REAL original “rebel girls” of the recording industry were the classic blues singers of the 1920s & 1930s: Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Victoria Spivey, etc.

The women you’ll hear on today’s episode were likely inspired by those artists.

My point here is to remember that being a voice of resistance carries on from generation to generation. The torch you light today may lead to an eternal flame of hope and inspiration for the musicians and artists of tomorrow.
