When you want to keep a weekly radio show fresh, especially in the
days of people being able to stream archived episodes, in my mind it's
best to try to not repeat tracks as much as possible. That results in a
lot of desperate digging.
During my years making a radio show for the local "jazz station" I spent
a lot of time exploring every traditional pop album of
the 60s in the hopes of finding some interesting jazzy tracks for my
show. Prior to that, I never specifically looked for those types of
LPs, but I'd pick them up if I came across them at the thrift store.
So,
after listening to tons of these albums back to back (as we can do in
the internet age) I began to notice a formula. As I'm sure you've
noticed, when artistic expression becomes a business, the people running
the business tend to repeat a winning formula until they run it into
the ground.
The musical style of these 1960s
Traditional Pop LPs was a blend of contemporary swingin’ 60s, groovy
soul, jazz, pop orchestration, and “Vegas lounge act”. That combination
of musical elements made up the majority of what became homogenized
output from record companies who seemingly made the same album with
different vocalists recording selections of the same pool of standards
again & again. Nearly every album in this genre included one or
several of the following songs:
“Call Me”,
“Yesterday,”
“the Look of Love”,
“Sunny”
“Goin’ Out Of My Head”,
“What Now My Love?”
"You Got Your Troubles"
"What The World Needs Now Is Love"
“Call Me”,

"More (Theme from Mondo Cane)"
"Feeling Good"
and/or the “Impossible Dream”
That’s why when someone within this genre recorded something different, it REALLY stood out. This Girls Gone POP! episode of Respected LadyLand features a handful of those standouts by vocalists including Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lee, Kim Weston, Sarah Vaughan, Playboy Playmate China Lee & many others
