Named from a phrase in a Shakespeare sonnet, Those Pretty Wrongs is a collaboration between Big Star founding member and drummer Jody Stephens and Luther Russell of roots rockers the Freewheelers. The duo got together when Stephens asked Russell to join him in performances of his former band's songs at screenings of the 2012 documentary Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me. They soon began writing songs together, signed with Burger Records, and released a 7" in the spring of 2015; the nostalgic jangle ballad "Lucky Guy" was recorded in Memphis using late Big Star co-leader Chris Bell's guitars from the band's 1972 debut album. It was accompanied by B-side "Fool of Myself." ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi

Women's Beat League Presents:

Lena Willikens
https://soundcloud.com/lenawillikens
"Nothing trains a DJ more than a long lasting residency. A truism that the Cologne based musician and DJ Lena Willikens always proves when she spins her vinyl. Since more then five years, she has been in charge of long and sweaty Friday night parties at Düsseldorf’s free-spirited club/bar Salon Des Amateurs. She is also a dedicated member of the Cómeme records tribe and all its missions: her name is frequently on the label’s party bills and she runs globally famed the monthly radio show “Sentimental Flashback” for Radio Cómeme, that UK-based Juno records elected to the best podcast/mix of 2014. As a DJ, radio broadcaster and producer, Lena is never committed to one style, all is welcome as long as it is twisted the in a one-of-a-kind way. As a producer she arranged a very special ghost wave track “High Holes“, that was released by the Düsseldorf based label Slowboy Records via the vinyl only sampler "Kingii” in 2012. Early 2015 she released her first solo EP “Phantom Delia” on Cómeme. Therefore she produced six mystique tracks between droning EBM, ghost-house and no-wavish outernational grooves.

Not only in her productions, also when she spins records Lena likes to let her self go in the name of dance and free thought. Her unforeseeable selections are pooling obscure proto-techno, jacking spirits, industrial boogie, synthesized disco, raw house and other outernational rhythms. So far she cheered clubs like Golden Pudel/Hamburg, Corsica Studios/London, Panoramabar/ Berlin, festivals like Nachtdigital or Nuits Sonores and toured through UK, Spain, East Europe, South and recently North America. Wherever she performed she surprised the folks and left them amazed about how expanded a crowd can let go and how far a DJ can move a dancefloor into unknown and bizarre spheres that stay catchy, while being edgy." hq is proud to present Slip Cast, a new video work by Portland dance collective sub.set with original score by Maddy Villano.

In reference to the molding of persons and behavior, both conscious and unconscious. The manufacture and slippage of self dependent on biological, environmental, and interpersonal factors.

We are in the space. Now that we are here we try to figure out what we are composed of and how we compose the room. The site specific video installation is an incomplete catalog of the things we are made of, including our hereditary biology, interpersonal relationships, media consumption, and the room.

Bugs is the first feature-length film by Canadian artist duo Life of a Craphead. (aka Amy Lam and Jon McCurley).

“Bugs is a satire about a bug society and its most successful family. The Bug Prime Minister, Shay (Gerry Campbell), has ruled the Bug Garden for many years and is finally, reluctantly, retiring. He’s chosen his niece, Gaston (Liz Peterson), to take over -- but Gaston, who is plagued with ambitions to be the Bug Garden’s most respected politician-architect-filmmaker -- is folding under the pressure. Dan is his other niece, but she’s a dreamer and can’t be trusted; she’s full of conflicting ideals and tries to act on all of them."

Bugs is premiering in the U.S. at Night Gallery in June, with a subsequent U.S. tour to S1 in Portland, Spectacle in Brooklyn, The Crown (with Wham City) in Baltimore, and PhilaMOCA in Philadelphia.

The screening will include a live Bugs intro and Q&A.

Disjecta Contemporary Art Space
8:00pm Friday, June 24, 20168:00pm Saturday, June 25, 2016

The 6th Ever Quiet Music Festival of Portland

On June 24th and 25th, 2015, Chris Johanson’s sixth annual Quiet Music Festival of Portland will

once again transform contemporary art space Disjecta into a tranquil cave of sonic serenity. Tuning

in and zonking out are equally encouraged as this year’s line-up takes you through soft sets

tailored to the festival’s ethos while you float on a sea of plush surfaces.

Celebrating the power of turning the dial down, the lowest-key festival in the land spans two

nights in Portland. Valet, Larry Yes, Sun Foot and Bouquet will all perform and Mary Gaitskill will do

a reading. The full list of artists will be released in April.

Mississippi Records’ Eric I returns to helm the festival’s DJ booth and spin copious amounts of medicinal vinyl.

The festival will be recorded by Seth Lorinczi (2-Track Mind Studio) using a vintage 2-track 1/4” tape

deck. Past recordings can be found at quietmusicfestivalofportland.bandcamp.com. The technology is

old, clunky and obsolete, but the recordings capture the special hush and tranquility of the QMF.

About Chris Johanson

Chris Johanson established the Quiet Music Festival of Portland in 2011 as a community listening

experience. His recent exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Malmo

Museum, SFMOMA, and UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Johanson’s work has been included

in the Whitney Biennial, the 8th Istanbul Biennial, and the 4th Berlin Biennial. In 2013 publishing

house Phaidon released his monograph as part of its Contemporary Artists Series. Johanson created

the record label Awesome Vistas which produces limited edition vinyl records and publications, and

the creative enterprise J and C Arts in collaboration with his partner, Johanna Jackson.

About Disjecta Contemporary Art Center

Founded in 2000, Disjecta Contemporary Art Center builds ambitious programs that promote artists

and engage communities. These dynamic programs showcase new work and fuel collaborations

between artists, curators and viewers that impact and intervene in the larger contemporary arts

dialogue. Disjecta’s reach extends far beyond the arts and encompasses the true essence of a cultural

facility: a place where ideas, dialogue, creativity, and diversity flourish.

JESSY LANZA

Jessy Lanza's second album 'Oh No' is addressed to her own constant nervousness. The pressure of music making, which used to calm her nerves, has led to a whole new world of contingencies that stoke the anxiety mill. The exclamation 'Oh No', for Jessy, marks yet another incident of randomness interrupting her tranquillity. All of which seems at odds with the confidence and spontaneity of this second album as well as recent collaborationswith the likes of Caribou, DJ Spinn and Morgan Geist and his Galleria project.

Made in her hometown of Hamilton, Ontario, with production partner Jeremy Greenspan from Junior Boys, the plaintive, reverb drizzled mood of the first album has all but given away to a more direct, self-assured and joyful album. As with many artists whose hometown lie off the usual network of cultural hotspots, 'Oh No' is driven positively by the idea of making music that isn't inspired by where she lives. Instead, the album resonates more with the philosophy of experimental pop of Japanese 80s electro outfit Yellow Magic Orchestra and Jessy's breathless, pitched vocals are reminiscent of YMO collaborator Miharu Koshi. Playfully laced with cascading arpeggios, crispy drum machines and breezy songs, 'Oh No' has an infectious energy that has been brewing in her live shows since her first album. As Jessy says 'I want to make people feel good and I want to make myself feel good'.

The album oscillates between the languid, coiled, arpeggiated slow jams of 'New Ogi', 'GoingSomewhere', 'Begins', 'Could be u', 'I Talk BB' and the low slung 808 groove of 'Vivaca', where Jessy's vocal gymnastics run wild over minimal drums and synths, and the catchy upbeat boogie of 'VV Violence', 'Never Enough', 'OhNo' and the high point of 'It Means I Love You" which has a sparse addictive bounce with a pitched up vocal refrain and a nod to Shangaan electro.

The trials of dealing with nervousness are also encrypted into the artwork, such as the plants that recur in the sleeve and videos. As Jessy remarked, "I became obsessed with surrounding myself with tropical plants. I've been convinced that the air quality in our house is slowly killing us. It might sound crazy but the plants have made a huge difference."

Anxiety and botanical remedies or not, 'Oh No' is a bold second album from Jessy and a marked step forward for her sound. Catch her as shetours with Junior Boys in February, plays EU headline shows from May to June, and in July has a North American Tour.

DJ TAYE

In a city filled with young talent, Teklife's youngest member, DJ Taye. reigns the most unique out of the rest in his generation making music in Chicago . Hailing from the south side and south suburbs, standing out didn't take much for Taye. A member of the worlds finest clique of Footwork Dj's since 2010, producing and rapping since the age of 11, and DJing since 12, Every release, album, EP, as time goes on, seems to evolve more in more within the soul of an inspired and self motivated footwork pioneer. Trunk-rattling bass, neck-snapping riddums, all influenced from hip-hop, club, four-to-the-floor dance music, house, with sample varieties ranging to the latest trends to 90's rap, 80's disco and funk, even 70's soul music. Traveling the world and letting every soul feel the energy that Teklife has to offer, is his daily mission. Teklife Or No Life.

LEAD BY LORENE BOUBOUSHIAN

As an interdisciplinary, improvisational performer and workshop facilitator, I am captivated by the underlying motives for any action. In workshops and lab-based environments, often it is assumed that we should follow our “interests” or “intentions,” when in fact our in-the-moment actions are a result not of clear-cut decisions but our relationship to the organism of bodies, room and objects around us colliding with what’s inside us. What do we want and why? What if we derailed ourselves, worked with our own insincerity, faked ourselves out, played tricks? Is it possible to create a realm where all is valid and nothing is right? For anyone interested in performing, from any discipline. Bring objects you are interested in.

here is a more general description and some video of past classes. this refers to more sonic based stuff i've been doing with matthew gantt, but it's still nice to watch i think:

ERIN TOBEY (BLOOMINGTON, IN)
http://erintobey.bandcamp.com

Erin Tobey has been settled in Bloomington, Indiana for more than a decade now. Even with many friends lured away to the coasts and the small town tempo rarely escalating, Tobey has kept busy with numerous projects, musical and visual. It' s been over ten years since her last solo album, but with Middlemaze the pot has finally boiled over. The record was written over years while walking and driving, moving slowly outward from deep within an interior world. Taking stock of this time gone by, Tobey blends the pastoral, philosophical, and funny mundane: the hubris of youth, the ambiguous middle path between Right and Wrong, seasons changing, device addiction, the self- reflection inspired by closed-circuit TVs in the mall. The album' s energetic numbers stomp with shimmering guitars and pop-punk propulsion. This soon gives way to Tobey' s quintessential starry folk, depicting married love and apocalyptic dread with equal tenderness. It' s the album' s final turns that draw the most shade, ending with the careening, stereophonic Infinity Song that literally shouts into the void. "When will it end? Will it?"

Made at Russian Recording with brother Matt Tobey and husband Jeff Grant, the family trio works as both a rock outfit and eclectic backing band. Middlemaze covers a lot of ground. It' s an apogee of some kind,a firmly placed flag from an artist reflecting on womanhood and wondering what comes next.

Course Description

This 3-part workshop will focus on the basic understandings of operating and manipulating turntables, mixers, and a power amplifier (PA) in the context of creating a live DJ mix.

We will begin by introducing the basics behind these pieces of gear, both individually and their relationship to each other. Next, our focus will turn to practical listening as we work to comprehend rhythms and the ways our records work together to create a momentum of sound. These two basic tools of DJing – electronic hardware and human intuition – will be reconciled in the final session as we identify systems for sequencing records in a live setting.

We will discuss ways of training our bodies to react to our ears and translate those reactions to the turntable & mixer. Core concepts touched on include beat-matching, identifying tempos, and developing an identity as a dj based on each individual’s tastes and strengths.

Each week, in addition to the guided session, there will be a day of open equipment hours to practice the concepts that were taught in each class.
