“MonsterBox Comedy, Portland's hit standup comedy show, returns to Alberta Street Pub Thursday, March 13th at 8pm with headliner Papp Johnson (Comedy Central, Kill Rock Stars Records)!

About the headliner:

Papp Johnson touched the stage for the first time at SF Sketchfest in 2010 and changed comedy forever by winning Sony’s Death at a Funeral stand-up competition… all while sitting down. Papp then took his talents south to LA and used his incredible storytelling ability and punchlines to grow his legend even bigger with appearances on Comedy Central as well as several festival appearances (SF Sketchfest, Treefort Comedy Festival, 1865 Festival).

In 2023, Papp recorded his debut album “Timeless” for Kill Rock Stars Records, which became one of Paste Magazine’s Top 10 comedy albums of the year.

And if you think he looks familiar, it might be from one of his many appearances in commercials for Dunkin Donuts, Samsung, Fox Sports or shows such as “That Damn Michael Che” or “Wu-Tang: An American Saga”. No matter where you’ve seen him, there is no denying that Papp Johnson’s art is timeless.

Joining Papp is another hilarious lineup of comedians, including:

Virginia Jones!
Gabby Poccia!
Anthony Robinson!
Phil Schallberger!
Geoff Tate!

Hosted by:

Imani Denae: Voted one of Willamette Week’s Five Funniest Comedians and one of the Portland Mercury’s Geniuses of Comedy.

Adam Pasi: Featured on the popular Don’t Tell Comedy stand-up show and PBS’ Roots of Comedy.

With music by DJ Klyph and DJ Ambush, the dynamic, hip-hop DJing duo of No Requests!

Presented in partnership with Kickstand Comedy! 21+ only. Seating is limited, so advance tickets are recommended. Alberta Street Pub is located at 1036 NE Alberta Street, Portland, 97211.

About MonsterBox Comedy: MonsterBox Comedy is produced by Jason Lamb, formerly of the standup show Minority Retort, and continues to be inspired by its co-founder, the late Raishawn Wickwire, renowned for producing the popular comedy show No Pun Intendo. The show’s goal is to bring together the best of local and national comedic talent, offering a fresh, hilarious and diverse comedy experiences that push the boundaries of standup and delivers unforgettable performances.

Dance to vintage vinyl (1950-1980) by women!
Soul - "classic" Rock - Pop - Blues - "oldies"  - Latin - International - Disco - Glam
Familiar Favorites & Rarities!

It's the DJ Action Slacks  annual Women's History Month dance party just in time to remind everyone that women actually DO matter AND this year it falls on International Women's Day!

We'll celebrate women who made it through the gauntlet, past the gatekeepers long enough to make their voices heard on vinyl.

Whether they released dozens of records or just one, these women created the musical document of our experiences, thoughts, & feelings during a time when women's civil rights were becoming a political issue.

Join me at the Kenton Club to dance to a variety of music made by women. Let's celebrate our endurance, perseverance, talents, creativity, humanity, and rebelliousness!

"Respected LadyLand" alludes to a place where I think so many women would love to exist. I know I would personally like to live in a land where I'm seen and believed, valued, treated with respect, compensated fairly without exploitation, free from intimidation or harassment, with autonomy over my own body and mind. Maybe if we envision such a place perhaps we'll feel compelled to mobilize to fight for it.

For this edition of Respected LadyLand we're going to try blocking the time:
8 pm - 10pm will be mostly 1950s & 1960s music
10pm to Midnight will be mostly 1960s & 1970s music

*Please be considerate to others and test for COVID prior to attending events, particularly because we don't know what the future holds in terms of health care in the coming months/years. THANKS

We're Going to Dance and Have Some Fun!

My next dance party will be one near dear to my heart. Every dance-DJ has an origin - that music or experience that woke them up to the magic of music + dancing.

I hope you will join me in celebrating the good vibes that made me realize I love to dance during my "ARTSY" high school years

FLAME presents GROOVE IS IN THE HEART is a tribute to some of my DANCE musical roots - a mixture of groovy 1960s + funky '70s + '90s "Daisy Age" dance grooves (and some of the original records they sampled).

Expect to hear Deee-Lite, David Bowie, The Supremes, De La Soul, Otis Redding, the B-52s, Aretha Franklin, The Velvet Underground, Stevie Wonder., Prince, ABBA, The Talking Heads, the Beatles, and so much more!  And we'll close out the last hour with an 80s/(early)90s Gen Xtra bombdiggity dance off!

Dress in BRIGHT (dayglo or neon) colors, flower-power patterns, or in the style of "'90s does '60s" Daisy Age".  I'm going to attempt to get some glo-lights going (we'll see if it works).

So, start getting that ensemble together and get ready to dance with Me, Myself & I at the Kenton Club! Allow yourself to BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF LOVE by dancing to vintage vinyl !

Like most DJ Action Slacks dance parties, this event is open to all kind-hearted people, but is geared toward the Portland LGBTQmunity & its allies.

SPACES OF EXCEPTION (2018) is a documentary resulting from the long-term multimedia project “The Native and the Refugee," profiling the American Indian reservation in the United States alongside the Palestinian refugee camp in the Middle East. The film explores these spaces as sites of resilience and cultural transmission, while connecting experiences of attempted genocide and erasure across settler colonial regimes. The documentary was filmed from 2014-2017 in Arizona, New Mexico, New York, and South Dakota in the United States as well as in Lebanon and the West Bank.

“These portraits are an attempt to understand the land—its memory and divisions—and to understand the conditions for life, community, and sovereignty.”

Stay for a discussion after the film with directors Matt Peterson and Malek Rasamny. Click here to register for the discussion with filmmakers on Zoom at approximately 7:30pm. GIVEAWAYS including, (while supplies last), each party guest will receive a free set of bubble gum cards I've designed for each of the above artists.

* On Saturday, Oct 12 I, DJ Action Slacks, will be eerily producing my 12th vintage-inspired Halloween dance party in Portland! AND it'll be the10th one co-DJed by Wildman James (of Morgan & the Organ Donors)!

BUT that's not the only DJ anniversary I'll be celebrating on Oct 12.  It will also mark the 30th anniversary of my first time DJing in public and in general.  WHOA!

Yes, 30 years ago, Khaela Maricich (who later started the band The Blow & my nextdoor neighbor in the Evergreen State College dorms) invited me to DJ at a Halloween party taking place in a barn with a dirt floor located in the middle of the forest somewhere in the pitch-black dark of night in Olympia, WA. If you think Portland is/was weird, it is NOTHING compared to Olympia in the mid-1990s!

ESG with Strange Babes and Dirt Twins

ESG is coming back to Portland! After their triumphant show last year, they decided to revisit us one more time to bring the party. This is IT.

ESG formed in the South Bronx in 1978. Their unique mix of hip hop and punk has never been replicated, though many have tried. ESG’s hit “UFO” is one of the most sampled songs of all time. It cannot be overstated how important this band is.

Even more important than their irreducible originality is the fact that this band will MAKE YOU dance. They are as live as you’ll ever hear music. Come on down for the party of the year.
