When it comes to defining the space between classical and electronic music, hardly any other name is mentioned as often as that of the Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer. His unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and his sonic alchemy of ambient textures and atmospheric electronica, has won him many fans around the world. Numerous tours and concerts all over the globe have strengthened his reputation as both an exceptional instrumentalist and a fascinating live musician. His albums have garnered international acclaim from critics and audiences alike, and his live shows are regularly sold out.

You already know Phil Cook, at least if you've listened to any of the most essential folk-rock, indie rock, or even gospel records of the last decade. The spirited piano solo on Hiss Golden Messenger's "Day O Day," the incisive melody of Bon Iver's "AUTAC," the mesmerizing elegance of the keys on Hurray for the Riff Raff's "Life on Earth"-yes, those are all Phil Cook, a beloved collaborator capable of transforming an entire song with a pretty lick here, a sharp line there. The War on Drugs, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Ani DiFranco, Nathaniel Rateliff, Frazey Ford, the Indigo Girls: Cook's partnerships in just the last dozen years shape their own best-of.
But now, Phil Cook has returned to his first musical love: solo piano. It is, after all, the instrument of his upbringing and now the most direct line between his fathoms-deep sensitivity and the ears of his audience. On the new release, All These Years, Cook's playing-a chronicle of gorgeous and emotionally expansive meditations-reorients expectations of solo piano composition and improvisation. Indeed, that exquisite album is just the start for a player approaching the grand old instrument from the perhaps unlikely foundation of American folk music.
Two decades ago, Cook left his native Wisconsin for North Carolina, largely to be closer to the American roots music that had taken over his life. The blues, bluegrass, old-time, country: They formed a composite lingua franca for Cook, who began to deliver his keen understanding of these sounds with a guitar or a banjo, a slide or fingerpicks. He funneled that information into his pioneering avant-folk band Megafaun and subsequent duties as an in-demand sideman. But in early 2020, Cook paused his relentless touring duties with others, intent on focusing on how all his experiences and erudition could fit into his own songs. He found a cabin in the North Carolina mountains and woke early and wrote late, penning aubades and nocturnes and endearing reflections on his own life. The results feel like a mirror held to a heart and mind squinting to find light in our age of darkness, hope in a moment where it's easier to believe in its absence.
Traditional folk music, we are rightly told, was often the sound of people getting by, of chronicling despair and worry so that they might get through that stuff, if only for the next five minutes. Technique and melody and vocabulary aside, that is the absolute essence Phil Cook summons at the piano, whether supporting some famous singer or offering the warm flicker of his solo work. This is music that makes you glad to have heard it, glad that it exists, glad that you're here with the chance to be glad at all.

The Jins have been on a tear for the last decade, bringing their
fusion of incredible riffs, bombastic drums, and driving basslines to
fans first in Vancouver, and then across Canada and the US.
Ben
Larsen, (guitar vocals) Hudson Partridge, (Bass) and Jamie Warnock
(drums/vocals) got the ball rolling in 2014 in the living room of a
shared house. This music was not destined to remain in the living room
however, and soon the Jins were playing stages both in Vancouver, and
then across Canada, with a self-produced EP and Album along the way.
The
hard work paid off in 2019 when The Jins were noticed by Vancouver
indie label 604 Records, and an EP was soon in the works with producer
Dave Genn (Matthew Good Band, 54-40). The resulting EP featured the
runaway hit "She Said" (14M+ streams on Spotify) and the eponymous
"Death Wish."
In 2022, The Jins returned with a vengeance and
once again hit the local scene with songs that they had kept in the
vault. The indie rock smoothness of "Metro", the air punching anthem of
"Stay Please", and the garage rock cool of "Effigy", the pieces came
together that would become 2023's "It's a Life" LP. While not afraid to
show their influences, one can hear the weight of Sabbath, the harmony
of the Beatles, the echoes of Smashing Pumpkins, all wrapped in their
unique swagger and humour.
When the three-piece hit the stage,
you are in for one thing and one thing alone, and that's a spectacular
show. The songs take on new life and become barrelling avatars on the
shoulders every rock band stands on. The crowd moves, sways, jumps, and
screams to the beck and call of the instruments and vocals as a wall of
sound crashes over you, just to recede and hit you once again. In
between guitar changes and Larsen's trademark banter, The Jins achieve
one thing on every song they play and every time they take the stage-
sheer passion, and the one goal of bringing everyone together for a good
time.

Etran de L’Aïr (or “stars of the Aïr region”) welcomes you to Agadez, the capital city of Saharan rock. Playing for over 25 years, Etran has emerged as stars of the local wedding circuit. Beloved for their dynamic repertoire of hypnotic solos and sun schlazed melodies, Etran stakes out a place for Agadez guitar music.
Etran is a family band composed of brothers and cousins, all born and raised in the small neighborhood of Abalane, just in the shadow of the grand mosque. Sons of nomadic families that settled here in the 1970s fleeing the droughts, they all grew up in Agadez. The band was formed in 1995 when current band leader Moussa “Abindi” Ibra was only 9 years old. “We only had one acoustic guitar,” he explains, “and for percussion, we hit a calabash with a sandal.” Over the decades, the band painstakingly pieced together gear to form their band and built an audience by playing everywhere, for everyone. “It was difficult. We would walk to gigs by foot, lugging all our equipment, carrying a small PA and guitars on our backs, 25 kilometers into the bush, to play for free…there’s nowhere in Agadez we haven’t played.”
Whereas other Tuareg guitarists look to Western rock, Etran de L’Aïr play in a pan-African style that is emblematic of their hometown, citing a myriad of cultural influences, from Northern Malian blues, Hausa bar bands, to Congolese Soukous. It’s perhaps this quality that makes them so beloved in Agadez. “We play for the Tuareg, the Toubou, the Zarma, the Hausa,” Abindi explains. “When you invite us, we come and play.” Their music is rooted in celebration, and invokes the exuberance of an Agadez wedding, with an overwhelming abundance of guitars, as simultaneous solos playfully pass over one another with a restrained precision, forceful yet never overindulgent. Yet even at its most serious, Etran’s music is engaged and dynamic, reminding us that music can transmit a message while lighting up a celebration. This is music for dancing, after all.
