PDX Jazz is a non-profit cultural arts organization dedicated to curating jazz in Portland, Oregon and fostering the growth of musical offerings in the Pacific Northwest. The contributions and sponsorship of the public is to inspire, educate and develop future jazz audiences for generations to come. PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival, began operations in 2003 in preparation of the inaugural 2004 Jazz Festival. Conceived by former Mt Hood Festival Artistic Director Bill Royston, the proposed annual event was awarded a three-year city government grant with co-founder and partner Travel Portland (formally POVA). The Festival’s mandate was established as a cultural tourism initiative to celebrate February’s Black History Month by highlighting a series of jazz education and outreach programs that would extend into Portland’s schools and community centers.

✽ Charlie Hilton ✽
Though she maintains some reservations about the implications of something as abstract as identity, Charlie Hilton, known up until now for her work in the band Blouse, has now forged a new one with her debut solo album, Palana.
Enlisting Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait as producer, Hilton freely experimented with diverse sounds and moods — some minimal and some cacophonous — out of the confines of a band structure.

✽ Candace ✽
Psychedelic and shoegaze influences emerge throughout their catalogue: the atmospheric tones of early Verve, a droning pulse reminiscent of Loop. Some songs bounce gleefully forward with a pop sensibility, while some keep a cool distance and move with a language distinctly their own.

Black Lives Matter Founders
A Vision of Justice for All
With a vision of justice for all, the Founders of Black Lives Matter, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi, engage audiences in discussion about race relations in America and how their activism from the fringes became the national movement it is today, galvanizing individuals to stand up together against the state violence, police brutality and social injustice plaguing our country. The MLK Tribute is part of Black History Month and the “Living the Legacy” series of campus and community events honoring the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This event is presented by the Office of Global Diversity and Inclusion.

They are on a July tour now and have a hometown record release show at The Wick in Brooklyn set for October 25.
'Burnt Offering' was recorded live in the studio, engineered and produced by Tom Brenneck, a founding member and guitarist in The Budos Band who runs Dunham Records and Studios and has worked with Cee-lo Green, The Black Lips and more. It was written at the band's longtime Staten Island studio, where they've gathered for weekly rehearsals for over fifteen years. The haunting album cover was created by drummer Brian Profilio, a NYC public school art teacher.
The new album is dripping with the psychedelic sounds of early heavy metal fused with the tight-knit propulsion of Fela Kuti. "The Sticks" kicks off with a snarling riff seamlessly doubled on bass and guitar and unfurls into sludgy breakdowns and searing guitars. The title track was recorded with a Binson Echorec, a classic tape machine used by Pink Floyd / Syd Barrett.
The Budos Band has brought their loud, rowdy parties to venues and festivals across the globe, and their music has been featured everywhere from skate videos to video games (MLB The Show), TV (Entourage), and film (New York, I Love You).

Pollinators serve an important role in our local food web. More specifically, we need them in order for our fruit trees to produce bountiful fruit sets! In this hands-on workshop, you will gain a basic understanding of bee-keeping, learn about the life of bees, how to construct mason bee habitats, and which plants are favorable for attracting pollinators. For the hands-on portion of this workshop, we'll be cleaning mason bee cocoons and assembling mason bee habitats that will be installed at our 2016 Community Orchard sites. Additionally, every participant will get to take home cocoons, paper tubes for starter bee homes, and pollinator friendly flower seeds.
About the instructors:
Jen Davis lives in Portland with her two kids and husband. She is an artist, writer, filmmaker and urban farmer. She grows 16 kinds of fruit, and nearly one half of her family's vegetable supply. She also keeps ducks, and has raised Mason bees for ten years. She teaches Mason bee workshops from home and at schools throughout the region.
Madelyn Morris is a Portland-based educator and co-owns Mickelberry Gardens, LLC with her husband. The start-up company is developing a product line based on locally harvested herbs, raw honey, beeswax, and other hive products from the couple’s steadily growing honeybee apiary in southeast Portland - where humane, ethical, and organic beekeeping methods are always utilized. Madelyn is happy to share her enthusiasm for honeybees and other pollinating insects, and promotes deepening our relationship with these fascinating and helpful creatures. www.mickelberrygardens.com

Bike love is in the air.
Join us for the sixth annual Live the Revolution, presented by Sugar Wheel Works. It’s a bicycle-themed storytelling event that benefits the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s Safe Routes to School education program. For the past five years, Sugar Wheel Works has been celebrating its anniversary with this great event as a way to inspire the next generation to ride!
“I remember my first bike—a little pink Schwinn ‘My Fair Lady’ spec’d with a banana seat and a bell! I had the training wheels for half a summer before I declared them useless and in one afternoon I had learned the art of the two-wheeler. Once I had a bike no television could keep me inside—the world was mine to discover. Today I ride a pink Sweet Pea bicycle spec’d with a brooks saddle, bell and no training wheels!”
-Jude Gerace, Owner Sugar Wheel Works

Adams and Ollman is pleased to present A Future Life, a solo exhibition by New York-based artist Jonathan Berger. The exhibition will open on February 12 and be on view through March 12. This is the artist’s first exhibition in Portland, Oregon.
For A Future Life, Berger has created an installation comprised of a handmade floor and stage-like plinths, all of which have been constructed from thousands of small charcoal blocks. This imperfect gridded surface holds both the viewer and a series of elaborately crafted small-scale sculptural objects made from a restricted palette of what the artist refers to as elementary materials, which he identifies as tin, putty, charcoal, and chalk.
Central to the exhibition is a small model depicting a century plant, a flowering agave with roughly the same lifespan as a person, which dies after its first and only bloom. Berger’s rendition is made from a no longer produced tin material that he salvages whose silver surface appears, in turns, mirrored, dull, and corroded. In another untitled work, also made from the same material, the sharp points of two hearts orbit each other so closely that they nearly touch. In a third work, Berger has constructed a large globe from putty that appears impossibly round for its size and the apparent imperfect nature of the material from which it is made. Its dark grey surface, both polished and scratched, obscures any understanding of the object’s true weight, material, or content.
The objects in Berger’s set-like, nearly monochromatic exhibition appear simultaneously common and mysterious and the materials from which they are made are both recognizable, yet inaccessible or out of time--almost a caricature of themselves. Each isolated on its own plinth, the sculptures in the exhibition can be understood in terms of portraiture. The relationships that they form to one another and the viewer yield an implied narrative structure, which hints at something fundamental to human experience.
While Berger's connection to the individual works in the show remains personal and specific, their emotional weight and the evocative nature of the materials, as well as the accessibility afforded by his use of archetypal forms, gives the total work the feeling of a pop song--stylized, lyrical and open. The exhibition then becomes a structure into which one can project his/her own experience.
This exhibition marks Berger’s return to the construction of objects after a nearly eight-year hiatus, during which time he pursued projects which approached portraiture through making exhibitions that functioned as experimental biographies of various historical figures. Berger is best known for his six-year investigative portrait of entertainer Andy Kaufman, which resulted in three exhibitions that used abstract configurations of primary information, in the form of ephemera and testimony, to create a portrayal of Kaufman which was simultaneously accurate and inconclusive.
