The Stews

After releasing their debut album, What Was, in April of 2022, The Stews have been a non-stop touring machine. Playing hundreds of shows a year has allowed them to hone in their musical and songwriting skills alike. With 2023 summer tour sellouts ranging from Washington DC's 9:30 Club, Charleston's Windjammer, New York City's Bowery Ballroom, and countless more, The Stews have proven that they are a musical force to be reckoned with. The summer tour even featured a venue record-breaking 800+ day-of-show tickets sold at Avondale Brewing in Birmingham, AL.

In addition to the aforementioned legendary venues, The Stews played to packed out, ravenous crowds at Bonnaroo, Sweetwater 420Fest, and Roosterwalk. The band drove straight from their summer tour finale at Appleton, Wisconsin's Mile of Music to meet up with Moon Taxi to support their fall tour. After months on the roading supporting Moon Taxi, the band returned home to Charleston, SC to finish up their second studio album. With thousands of tickets sold across a three night NYE run in Charlotte, Savannah, and Atlanta, the band capped off a record breaking year.

Looking forward to 2024, The Stews are thrilled to release this new music to a starving audience. The album can't be confined to one genre, as fans will find songs reminiscent of The Allman Brothers, Audioslave, Pink Floyd, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise to name a few.

Born in Mexico City and currently based out of New York City, Magos Herrera is a dazzling jazz singer-songwriter, producer, and educator declared as "One of the greatest contemporary interpreters of song” by The Latin Jazz Network. With a sultry voice and an unparalleled presence in the contemporary Latin American jazz scene, she is best known for her eloquent vocal improvisation and her singular bold style, which embraces elements of contemporary jazz with Ibero-American melodies and rhythms  in a style that elegantly blends and surpasses language boundaries.

“She gets way under the skin of the song, recalling great communicators like Edith Piaf or Billie Holiday” is how NPR describes Herrera’s talents who has recorded 9 albums including joint collaborations with producer Javier Limón in addition to having participated as a guest artist of several recordings and albums. An accomplished artist, Magos has performed in leading international cultural venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in NYC, Kennedy Center in DC, Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City,  Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Union Chapel in London, Palau de la Musica in Valencia, and has been part of the line-up of some of the most memorable jazz festivals including Montreux Jazz Festival and Montreal Jazz Festival, to mention a few. Featured as one of the most creative Mexicans in the world by Forbes Magazine, throughout her career, Magos has garnered important awards and recognitions, including a Grammy short-list nomination in the Best Jazz Vocal Album category for her album Distancia (2009), and received the Berklee College of Music’s Master of Latin Music Award.

In 2018 Magos released her album Dreamers (Sony Music) in collaboration Brooklyn Rider. ”Dreamers is not only a work of art, setting musicians of the highest order to accomplished music with purpose, but it is a work of love as well” wrote Sounds and colors on this highly acclaimed album that rapidly got into the Top lists of The New York Times, Billboard classical, NPR Music,  among others and was nominated for the Grammys for Best arrangement with the song “Niña”.

Cornelius

Cornelius is the brainchild of Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keigo Oyamada. A performing musician since his teens, Oyamada created his creative alter-ego (the name is an homage to the Planet of the Apes), in the early 1990s from the ashes of his previous project, Flipper's Guitar.

With the 1997 release of Fantasma, Cornelius gained international recognition for his cut and paste style reminiscent of American counterparts Beck and The Beastie Boys and was released internationally by Matador Records. Being called a 'modern day Brian Wilson' for his orchestral-style arrangements and production techniques, Cornelius subsequently became one of the most sought after producer/remixers in the world, working with a wide range of artists including Blur, Beck, Bloc Party, MGMT, and James Brown.

With 2002's Point, Cornelius' music took a quantum shift, going from sampling 'found sounds' to looping organic elements and creating lush soundscapes. Using water drops as the rhythmic backbone of 'Drop' on his vocoder-infused cover of 'Brazil', the album dazed and amazed fans and set the path for the next phase of his career.

2007 brought this philosophy to an even higher level with the release of Sensuous. Cornelius' live shows are known around the world for spectacular visuals (all perfectly synchronized to the performance), custom lighting that doesn't simply augment the performance, but becomes another instrument within it, and a full band of equally talented and diverse players.

The companion piece to the album Sensurround + B Sides, earned the nomination for 'Best Surround Sound Album' at the 2009 GRAMMY Awards.

The summer of 2016 saw the release of Fantasma Remastered, on Lefse Records. The package, a 2LP reissue of his classic album, also included 4 additional outtakes and earned Pitchfork's 'Best New Reissue'.

Cornelius has recorded music for Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, scored the anime mega-film Ghost in the Shell Arise, performed as the backbone of Yoko Ono's reformed Plastic Ono Band, played the Hollywood Bowl with Yellow Magic Orchestra, and co-wrote and produced the Japanese artist salyu x salyu.

ESG with Strange Babes and Dirt Twins

ESG is coming back to Portland! After their triumphant show last year, they decided to revisit us one more time to bring the party. This is IT.

ESG formed in the South Bronx in 1978. Their unique mix of hip hop and punk has never been replicated, though many have tried. ESG’s hit “UFO” is one of the most sampled songs of all time. It cannot be overstated how important this band is.

Even more important than their irreducible originality is the fact that this band will MAKE YOU dance. They are as live as you’ll ever hear music. Come on down for the party of the year.

YOU are invited to contribute to making my next dance party the best night ever! I'm conducting an interesting, inclusive experiment for the August edition of FLAME!

I believe music to be the great unifier, bringing communities together to bond over our commonalities.  I've always aimed to make my events something to be enjoyed by everyone.  That's why I want YOU to select the dance songs for my next dance party.

Here are the guidelines:

1) The recording must be from the years 1950-1980

2) I must have in my VINYL collection

3) Your request must be made PRIOR to the day of the dance party

4) I'm not restricting genres, but my collection mostly consists of soul, country, 50s-70s"oldies", classic rock, disco, funk, jazz, blues, r&b, rockabilly, gospel, and Latin.

5) You can request up to THREE songs

TRY ME!  If you request it and I have it, I will play it.

This has the potential to be REALLY fun and cathartic!  PARTICIPATE!

Send your requests using the contact form at djactionslacks.com

What song lifts your spirits? Who will you choose?

Will it be The Supremes? David Bowie? Aretha? Parliament? Tammy Wynette? Little Richard? The Monkees? Grace Jones? T-Rex? Fleetwood Mac? Bill Withers? Suzi Quatro? Neil Diamond? Ella Fitzgerald? Heart? Foreigner? Some kind of show tune from Rita Moreno?

I can't wait to find out!!!!
